Norbert didn’t always look this way- as a puppy, he was covered in brown curly fur, but with age his coat changed to a bright white. His size, on the other hand, did not change very much- with little Norbert weighing in at only 3 pounds now that he is full-grown. Although he looks like a puppy, Norbert is eight years old- with the wisdom and sweetness needed to be the perfect therapy animal!

Norbert became a therapy dog after a woman passing by in a store suggested it to his owner, Julie Steines. He was still a small puppy when she told Julie that he would make a great therapy dog. In addition to his small and portable size, Norbert has had a calming effect on others since he was just a puppy. After Norbert became a registered therapy dog when he was just a year old, he started volunteering at a nursing home and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Norbert’s mom Julie knew that he had a special spark about him that could instantly change a person’s mood. They continued to visit hospitals and nursing homes together, spreading his infectious smile wherever he went. Norbert propelled to celebrity-status when he became the star of the book his mom and her mother, Dr. Freyermuth, created a book called “Norbert: What Can Little Me Do?” The book had the positive message that you don’t need to be big to make a difference in the world, rather that we all have special gifts to offer.
